Significant 37% Reduction in EU Irregular Border Entries Through July 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary data from European Union sources indicate a 37% decrease in irregular border crossings during the initial seven months of 2026. Frontex recorded approximately 61,000 detections at the bloc’s external borders from Jan. 1 through July 31, representing a decline compared to the same period of 2025. Most major migration routes experienced fewer crossings during this timeframe. These figures serve as the most recent indicator of irregular entry activity along the EU’s external frontier.

The Eastern Mediterranean continued to be the busiest corridor, with 20,232 detections, which is a 28% drop from 28,068 during the same months last year. The Central Mediterranean registered 16,454 detections, decreasing by 55% from 36,656. Collectively, these two routes made up roughly 60% of the detections included in the EU entry total. Libya remained the primary country of departure along the Central Mediterranean route throughout the seven-month period.

In contrast, the Western Mediterranean saw an increase, with 11,217 detections, up 37% from 8,175 a year earlier. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025. Land detections through June totaled 2,569, up from 1,079. The Western African route experienced a 60% decline, with 4,682 detections, while crossings through the Western Balkan routes fell 26% to 4,910. The Eastern Land Border saw a 44% decrease, totaling 3,209 detections.

Mediterranean Routes Constitute the Majority of EU Border Detections

Additional data on Channel crossings toward the United Kingdom revealed a significant drop as well. Frontex recorded 22,469 attempted or successful crossings leaving the EU, which is a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel crossing figures are not included in the EU entry total. Furthermore, Frontex reported 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, marking a 9% increase. The seven-month data exclude exceptional border events in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based these figures on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4, with the possibility of future revisions as authorities update their records. The statistics represent detections rather than unique individuals, meaning a person might be counted multiple times if crossing at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is important when comparing route-specific totals with the overall number of migrants involved, as it applies across the agency’s external-border dataset.

First-half Decline Extended Over Seven Months

The current figures reinforce the trend observed after the first six months of 2026, when Frontex recorded over 49,000 irregular border crossings—a 37% decrease year-over-year. At that time, detections on the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than the previous year, but the seven-month comparison shows an overall increase of 37%. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June and a 60% decline through July.

According to the agency, roughly 3,800 officers are deployed at the European Union’s external borders, providing support for border management and life-saving operations at sea. These Frontex personnel also assist member states in implementing rules under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data reveal persistent uneven trends across different routes, with notable declines across most major corridors but an uptick on the Western Mediterranean route.
