EU commits €2.3 million to bolster Africa’s fight against cholera crisis

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has allocated €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian funding aimed at combating cholera outbreaks in West and Central Africa. This aid will benefit Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials explained that the funds will be used for treatment efforts, disease surveillance, improving access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The announcement coincides with a surge in cholera cases across several African nations during 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a notable increase predominantly in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria is set to receive €1.5 million, representing the largest portion of the emergency aid package. This funding will help expand the deployment of intervention teams and supply cholera kits along with other vital resources. It will also aid in treating water points and household water sources. Part of the support will be directed toward enhancing disease surveillance, especially in hard-to-reach areas. The program additionally includes case management, risk communication, and community awareness campaigns as health teams strive to curb transmission within affected communities.

According to the latest World Health Organization data, there have been 90,049 reported cholera cases across 18 countries in its African Region up to June 28, with 1,528 deaths reported. Nigeria alone reported 26,848 cases and 181 fatalities during the same period. In June, Nigeria documented 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO attributed over 95% of Nigeria’s cases in 2026 to Borno State, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most affected locations.

Funding targets treatment, water access, and surveillance activities

The Central African Republic will benefit from €500,000 to support case management, vaccination efforts, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. The funds aim to strengthen surveillance systems, improve case detection, and promote community engagement. Support will also be provided for safe and dignified burials where necessary during the outbreak response. WHO recorded 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country through June 28. The European Commission mentioned that this assistance is part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks affecting these four nations.

Cameroon will receive €100,000 to enhance outbreak containment and patient care in affected villages. This support will fund additional humanitarian personnel, essential medicines, cholera treatment units, and oral rehydration points. WHO reported 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon through June 28. Chad is allocated €200,000 to implement water, sanitation, and hygiene measures. The funding will also bolster community surveillance and case management. During the same reporting period, Chad documented 109 cases and three deaths.

Nigeria’s spike propels regional rise in cholera cases

WHO indicated that in June, the African Region saw 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 countries, marking a 95% increase from May. The region also recorded 284 cholera-related deaths that month. Nigeria registered the highest number of new cases, followed by the Congo and South Sudan. WHO linked the overall rise in Nigeria to the outbreak in Borno State, where conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and increased rainfall have heightened the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting water or food contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria, can cause severe dehydration and rapid health deterioration if untreated. The EU’s financial support aims to disrupt transmission pathways and enhance access to healthcare in affected regions. The total aid package for the four countries amounts to €2.3 million, with a focus on expanding treatment capabilities, strengthening surveillance, implementing vaccination programs where suitable, providing safer water, improving sanitation, and supporting communities directly amid ongoing outbreaks.
