Italy Experiences Its Most Extreme Summer Since 1950, Setting Record Temperatures in 2026

ROME, ITALY / RankWire.AI / – In 2026, Italy recorded its hottest summer since 1950, with an average temperature of 24.3 degrees Celsius across the nation. The National Research Council’s Institute for Bioeconomy noted that this figure surpassed the previous summer record set in 2003, which had an average of 23.6 degrees Celsius. The summer data, covering June through August, is based on temperature measurements taken two metres above ground level. This result positions 2026 as the warmest summer in Italy’s 76-year temperature record.

Italy summer 2026 becomes hottest in records since 1950
    1. Italy’s 2026 summer heat set a national temperature record in data dating to 1950.

August saw the most significant heat wave, with the country’s average temperature reaching 25.6 degrees Celsius. This exceeded the August average from 1951-1980 by 5.2 degrees and was 3.5 degrees higher than the August norm for 1991-2020. According to the National Research Council’s Institute for Bioeconomy, August 2026 broke previous monthly temperature records of 24.6 degrees in 2024 and 24.0 degrees in 2017. The ECMWF continues to maintain ERA5-Land, the climate dataset used for analyzing Italian temperatures.

Both July and August 2026 rank as the hottest months recorded in the dataset, based on the institute’s heat maps. This follows a record-breaking spring, during which Italy’s national average temperature reached 12.1 degrees Celsius. The same temperature was recorded during Spring 2024, matching that season’s record. From January to August, every month in 2026 was warmer than the same month in 2025, extending the period of elevated temperatures across much of the year.

    August Sets New Temperature Milestones

Temperature anomalies were widespread across Italy during the first eight months of 2026. Approximately 70% of the country experienced anomalies exceeding 1 degree Celsius, with about 40% surpassing 2 degrees. The most intense anomalies were observed in the northwestern plains and along the Apennines, regions that include large tracts of cultivated land. Elevated temperatures and drought conditions affected some agricultural zones during this period. Major cities such as Rome, Florence, and Turin also endured repeated heatwaves during June, July, and August.

The record figures derive from ERA5-Land data provided by ECMWF. This climate dataset extends back to 1950 and offers land-surface temperature information. Researchers compared temperature data over Italy throughout this period. Italy’s 24.3-degree summer average in 2026 was 0.7 degrees higher than the 2003 record. August’s 25.6-degree temperature surpassed the 2024 monthly record by 1.0 degree. All measurements refer to air temperatures recorded two metres above the ground surface.

Extensive Italian Heat Evidenced by Climate Data

A broader analysis of the Mediterranean region indicates exceptional heat during the summer of 2026. Data associated with Italy’s National Research Council revealed that sea-surface temperatures in the Mediterranean averaged approximately 27 degrees Celsius in July, marking the highest July average since 1993. The same study found that 79% of the Mediterranean experienced at least one strong or more intense marine heatwave. It is important to note that these marine temperature measurements are separate from the land-based temperature series used to establish Italy’s summer record.

Italy’s historic record occurred amid widespread summer heat across Europe. Climate evaluations indicate the continent as the fastest-warming region in the world over recent decades. The summer of 2026 was marked by droughts and wildfires affecting parts of Europe. Italy experienced months with temperatures above those of the previous year, culminating in the hottest July and August in the ERA5-Land series dating back to 1950. This data confirms summer 2026 as Italy’s hottest meteorological season within the historical record.
