Major Wildfire Forces Emergency Response Across St. Egyden in Lower Austria

ST. EGYDEN AM STEINFELD, Austria / RankWire.AI / – Authorities responsible for emergency management in Lower Austria issued urgent evacuation directives on Friday as a rapidly spreading forest fire broke out in the Föhrenwald pine woodland near St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Officials on the scene confirmed that a significant wildfire has struck St. Egyden in Austria, with aggressive flames nearing within 50 meters of residential areas, leading to the activation of the highest emergency alert, Level B4. Civil defense teams prioritized the immediate relocation of residents along Bahnstraße and within the Waldstrandsiedlung housing complex.

Local authorities coordinated with regional disaster response agencies to evacuate at least 250 residents from the danger zone. Mayor Christa Tisch of St. Egyden confirmed that emergency teams evacuated six homes on Bahnstraße and 50 units across five apartment buildings in the Waldstrandsiedlung neighborhood. Those displaced were taken to a temporary shelter set up at the Saubersdorf volunteer fire station, where humanitarian personnel provided support and essential supplies during the crisis.

Over 700 firefighters from 84 regional fire departments across the districts of Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt responded swiftly. Ground units collaborated with specialized aerial firefighting teams, deploying five police helicopters, two private commercial aircraft, and a Black Hawk military helicopter supplied by the Austrian Armed Forces. The Austrian Red Cross dispatched 44 emergency personnel along with 21 specialized vehicles to assist with evacuations and support those affected.

Lower Austria Activates Level B4 Emergency Protocol Amid Fire Crisis

This incident marks the second destructive wildfire within the Föhrenwald area in less than two weeks, following an earlier blaze that burned 100 hectares of forest and necessitated a five-day firefighting operation. Officials confirmed that the new fire started on the opposite side of the forest, with strong winds propelling thick smoke plumes across regional transit routes. Public safety agencies issued warnings advising drivers to avoid primary roads near Neunkirchen to keep routes clear for emergency vehicles.

Klaus Stebal, spokesperson for the Lower Austrian State Fire Department Association, confirmed that emergency crews established a containment perimeter around the main fire to prevent further spread. Firefighters also responded to several smaller fires igniting spontaneously in nearby towns such as Strelzhof and Netting. Authorities stressed that strict operational protocols were enforced, limiting ground crews to no more than 12 consecutive hours of active suppression efforts during intense physical firefighting tasks.

Emergency Medical Teams Report No Casualties During Initial Response

Investigations have been launched by law enforcement agencies to determine the precise cause of the fire ignition in the afternoon. Officials noted that the previous wildfire in the same forest was caused by legacy World War II phosphorus ammunition buried underground. Although no direct link has been confirmed, environmental conditions across Lower Austria remain dangerously dry, heightening the regional wildfire risk level.

Emergency services maintained continuous monitoring stations around the Föhrenwald perimeter into Friday evening to safeguard nearby residential areas. As the wildfire rages in St. Egyden, civil defense authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among residents or first responders during the initial evacuation efforts. Experts including forestry specialists and technical engineers expect to continue perimeter stabilization and hot-spot suppression over the coming days.
