HÜRTGENWALD / RankWire.AI / – German officials issued mandatory evacuation directives on Friday for about 1,800 inhabitants in western Germany as an rapidly spreading wildfire threatened residential areas. Local emergency agencies confirmed that municipal civil defense teams ordered the immediate evacuation of the entire Gey district within Hürtgenwald municipality, situated in North Rhine-Westphalia near the Belgian border. The emergency response was activated early in the morning after fire lines advanced within 300 meters of the community boundary.

Municipal emergency response teams manage logistics during large scale civil defense evacuations.

The wildfire initially started on Thursday afternoon across roughly 25 hectares of dense woodland, an area comparable to 35 football fields. Elevated seasonal temperatures, dry wind conditions, and dehydrated vegetation fueled the rapid expansion of the fire, which swiftly grew to over 300 hectares of forest by the next day. Emergency management authorities issued the highest threat level via the national NINA emergency warning app, advising residents to gather essential documents and personal medications before evacuating.

Regional disaster officials established a main reception and aid center at an elementary school in the nearby Straß district to host displaced families. Meanwhile, transportation authorities kept roads within Hürtgenwald closed to prioritize passage for emergency supplies and heavy machinery. Safety personnel confirmed that evacuation operations were proceeding smoothly, with rescue teams conducting door-to-door checks to ensure everyone complied.

Firefighting operations encountered serious obstacles due to unexploded World War II munitions buried throughout the surrounding forest, remnants of historic military activities that left ordnance behind. Emergency teams reported hearing occasional explosions from buried explosives as the fire’s heat approached a former military munitions depot near Düren. To reduce risks to personnel and establish firebreaks through dense terrain, Bundeswehr military units deployed armored vehicles to clear blocked access routes.

Aerial suppression efforts complemented ground firefighting teams, with specialized helicopters equipped with heavy-capacity water buckets conducting continuous drops from local reservoirs onto active hotspots. Over 300 emergency responders from municipal, state, and civil protection agencies, supported by technicians from the Technisches Hilfswerk, established physical barriers to prevent the fire from advancing further into residential areas.

Fire Rapidly Expanding to Cover 300 Hectares Overnight

Officials from the regional government voiced concern about the fire’s proximity to vital infrastructure and populated zones. North Rhine-Westphalia Deputy Premier Mona Neubaur emphasized the operational difficulties faced by response teams and confirmed that emergency funds from the state had been allocated to support local containment efforts. Coordination with Bezirksregierung Köln remains ongoing to ensure command continuity at the scene.

Civil protection units continue to secure the perimeter around Gey to protect homes and prevent rekindling as tactical operations persist. Agencies tracking environmental conditions monitor wind shifts and humidity levels to evaluate risks to neighboring communities. As the wildfire prompts evacuation of 1,800 residents, authorities assert that emergency services will stay fully operational until ground conditions are stabilized completely.
