The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, a day after ministers approved it. This amendment introduces a specific exception to existing restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment. It requires that each plug be verified by a notified body to meet the relevant BS 1363 standards. While product approval applies across the UK, the electricity safety change covers England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specification outlines requirements concerning electrical design, mounting systems, fire protection, labeling, and consumer instructions. Under controlled conditions, a technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring, demonstrating stable operation and absence of sustained unsafe energization or unacceptable thermal effects. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. These results contributed to the development of a UK-specific safety standard for the legal entry of these products into the market.
Retailers prepare for the approved product rollout
The government consultation process received 466 responses from various stakeholders, including businesses, specialists, regulators, and the public. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specification, with most also backing the plug regulation changes. Participants ranged from manufacturers, installers, and network operators to electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some raised concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Others emphasized the importance of distinguishing plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Major retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are preparing to introduce the new product category. This connection method caters to households unable to install traditional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Systems utilizing the new connection framework will not be legally operable before August 27. Starting from that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through standard household sockets. The capacity total of 22.8 GW as of June does not include systems designed for the new plug-in connection approach.
