An international team of climate scientists concluded that record-breaking heat is the dominant factor behind these extreme conditions, surpassing the influence of seasonal rainfall deficits. The continent has experienced river levels dropping to critical lows, widespread water restrictions, and devastating wildfires following a historic heatwave in June. Data shows that rising global temperatures significantly hasten moisture evaporation from land and water sources, creating an environment that is both extremely dry and highly volatile. Despite spring experiencing below-average rainfall, it was the temperature spikes driven by climate change that turned the situation into a severe drought crisis.

The study published by the World Weather Attribution group details how increasing temperatures actively diminish natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, emphasized that the drought is not primarily caused by reduced rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere that causes greater moisture deficits on land. This means the risk of drought continues to grow even in regions where rainfall patterns remain relatively stable. Scientists explain that each 1-degree Celsius rise in temperature allows the atmosphere to hold roughly seven percent more water vapor, which directly intensifies evaporation from soil and vegetation across the entire landscape.
Using extensive weather data and sophisticated computer models, researchers quantified how the likelihood of these drought conditions has changed by comparing today’s hotter climate with a scenario that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Results reveal that soils in western Europe are now five times more prone to extreme dryness than they would be without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, the same drought conditions are 11 times more probable. The analysis further shows that evaporative demand levels observed between April and June in western Europe were about 80 times more likely, indicating that rainfall deficits which previously would not have caused serious drought are now resulting in significantly drier soils.

Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich highlighted that soil drying trends are already evident during spring before summer even begins. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst for moisture accelerates, extracting critical water from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. The combination of a relatively moist start to the year followed by extreme heat created highly conducive conditions for large wildfires. This rapid land drying primed the environment for combustion, leading to severe fires across multiple countries. The findings confirm that climate change exacerbates drought across Europe and shifts traditional weather patterns into dangerously volatile cycles.
The agricultural sector is under unprecedented pressure due to the widespread loss of vital soil moisture. Drought conditions are causing significant disruptions in farming, with historic crop losses reported across several borders. France is projected to record its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, representing a major blow to regional food supplies. Meanwhile, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the agricultural supply chain. The scientific community warns that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions could become even more frequent. Experts highlight that these intense evaporative phenomena are occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate dangers posed by current emission levels. Should global temperatures reach 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such conditions could double.
