Germany Significantly Boosts its Counter-Drone Operations and Security Infrastructure

FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – In response to rapid advancements in unmanned aircraft technology, Germany is considerably enhancing its drone defence systems. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that counter-drone efforts will remain a long-term commitment for the Federal Police. His remarks came during a visit to the police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse, on Thursday. Dobrindt highlighted an ongoing technological contest between defence mechanisms and those seeking to bypass them.

Germany expands counter-drone force and security network
Germany expands counter-drone security across airports, policing and technology research.

The Federal Police established its specialized counter-drone division in December 2025 to oversee nationwide operations. The unit, which currently comprises approximately 70 personnel, as per latest government data, is slated to grow to 300 officers by the close of 2026. Additionally, the Interior Ministry has ordered an expansion from four to eight operational sites, aiming to enhance coverage and reduce response times throughout Germany.

Germany has also concentrated on equipping major airports under Federal Police jurisdiction with counter-drone technology. These airports include Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government has procured mobile detection and defence units for deployment at aviation hubs, though details of these systems remain undisclosed due to security reasons. Responsibility for drone countermeasures on airport grounds lies with police, while state police manage surrounding areas.

Federal Police’s Counter-Drone Network Extends Across Germany

This expansion follows an incident on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. Federal prosecutors reported that a drone loaded with professional explosives and a detonator entered the airport premises. Evidence suggested an intent to cause an explosion using the aircraft. Additionally, a cargo plane collided with an object suspected to be another drone in the broader airport vicinity. The federal prosecutor took charge of the investigation on August 6.

The Federal Criminal Police Office is leading the investigation under the guidance of the federal prosecutor. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the identities of those responsible for the incident. The government has refrained from assigning blame while evidence analysis continues. This case has renewed focus on safeguarding airports and critical infrastructure, with officials stressing the importance of faster coordination among federal agencies, state authorities, and security organizations involved in drone incident response.

Research Facility Launched to Counteract Drone Threats

Germany inaugurated a new Technology Center for Drone Security on August 18 at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt site. The center also leverages research capabilities at the organization’s Braunschweig location. The facility will test drone detection and defence systems under real-world conditions. The German Aerospace Center plans to invest over 10 million euros and create up to 40 new jobs. It will serve as a hub connecting researchers, security agencies, and private companies developing counter-drone technologies.

This new center operates alongside Germany’s Joint Counter-Drone Centre, which facilitates information sharing and assessment coordination among federal and state authorities. Moreover, federal police powers related to drone detection and defence have recently been enhanced. Dobrindt noted that the pace of technological change demands continuous development and testing of innovative systems. The government’s current strategy involves operational police units, coordinated security assessments, and dedicated research efforts to bolster protection against unauthorized and potentially dangerous drones.
