VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is in the process of developing BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the most sizable spacecraft created domestically to date. This satellite’s mission is to identify and evaluate disruptions impacting global navigation satellite systems, such as GPS and Galileo. The plan is to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The initiative primarily aims to detect jamming and spoofing signals from space and collect data on the timing and location of navigation system disturbances.

Within a multi-year research and development program, BEACONSAT will function as a technology demonstrator. Founded in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in chemical propulsion systems designed for satellite maneuvering in orbit. For BEACONSAT, the company supplies the propulsion modules, satellite structure, and thermal management solutions. Over the years, GATE Space has conducted more than 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport, simulating atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core technology of satellite mission rooted in Austrian innovation
Key systems for Austria’s first military satellite are supplied by various European firms. Graz-based IGASPIN provides high-precision technology aimed at detecting and analyzing GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor contributes additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice with approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency contributes to the mission’s support and co-financing through its ESA Marketplace program, which promotes technology demonstrations. This initiative allows commercial space technologies to be tested within security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an independent operational satellite system. The targeted launch date for BEACONSAT remains February 2027, with a Falcon 9 planned to carry the satellite into orbit. Post-deployment, the satellite will conduct the collection and analysis of GNSS interference data as part of its research agenda. The project brings together Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and specialized European technology firms.
